General Electric has become further involved with 3D printing by purchasing Arcam and SLM Solutions for $1.4 billion. Both companies were purchased because they can allow G.E to manufacture aerospace and automotive parts. Sweden's Arcam created a machine that can sinter  metal powder with an electron beam. SLM Solutions which is based in Germany also builds machines that are capable sintering metal powder. The two companies were purchased because while alike the process they use to sinter the metal and prepare it for manufacturing differs.
